Development of a Marker Assisted Selection Index
Beefbooster has always used Economic Selection Indexes, to weigh different traits according to their economic importance, providing a way to balance selection of different traits affecting profitability. These updated indexes will incorporate phenotypic information (birth weight, weaning weight) with genetic marker information (carcass qualities). Expected Breeding Value (EBV) for net feed efficiency is being developed and will be added to the selection index
Application of next generation genomic tools in Beef
This project looks at ways to accelerate the adoption of genetic technologies, specfically net feed efficiency and beef tenderness. Tx bulls are beining tested for net feed efficiency and their progeny are tested for net feed efficiency, beef tenderness and meat quaity. Tx bulls tested for net feed efficiency are bred to cow herds at Three Cross Cattle Ltd and Namaka Farms Ltd. Click on the link below to see results from the first set of progeny.
